The Jewish state observes its national day of mourning for fallen soldiers and victims of terror.

Since 1860, 23,741 fighters have perished both in battles waged to establish a state in the Jewish people’s historic homeland and in wars Israel fought against its Arab neighbors since independence was declared 71 years ago.

Following somber ceremonies on Tuesday night and the following day, the nation will switch gears on Wednesday evening to celebrate Independence Day.
