The Arab town of Jatt removed a street sign named after the founder of the Palestine Liberation Organization following an uproar.
The Israeli-Arab town of Jatt on Sunday removed a street sign named after arch-terrorist Yasser Arafat that had caused an uproar in the country.
The town removed other controversial street signs as well that had been named after various Palestinian leaders considered terrorists by Israelis.
The move follows an order by Interior Minister Aryeh Deri, who deemed the street-naming illegal.
“No street in the State of Israel will be named after murderers of Israelis and Jews,” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated during Sunday’s cabinet meeting. “We cannot allow streets in the State of Israel to be named after Yasser Arafat and Haj Amin al-Husseini [who led the Arabs against Israel in the 1940s] and others. We will make the arrangements, including new legislation if need be, so that this does not happen here.”
